Brown Hyenas are the more common hyena at Mount Etjo, they have long brown hair and are mostly nocturnal. A few Spotted Hyenas might visit the area from time to time but are rarely seen.
Hyenas rest in dens during the day, usually in caves up in the Okonjati Mountain Range or in old Aardvark holes. Sometimes dens are found with pups and temporary blinds are set up for photographic opportunities.
